Don't you just LOVE Alan Rickman?

Remember back in high school when you just looked around the room and could tell by what people wore and who they were clumped together with in the corner who the cool people were? No longer. Now we have the internet. We have Twitter follower numbers and Facebook friend counts and now we also have Klout.
What is Klout, you ask? Well, I don’t really know. But, I’m using it. In fact, I logged in just a little while ago and was dismayed to have lost a Klout point. WHAT?!?!
Now, Klout analyzes all sorts of things across various sites, Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin etc and gives you a score. And the only possible reason I can come up with for losing points is that I failed to blog about Alan Rickman this past week.
You see, Klout tells people what subjects it considers you to be influential in, and Klout has decided I am influential about Alan Rickman. It is certainly true that I adore Alan Rickman. I loved him in Die Hard. I cheered when he threatened to cut out someone’s heart with a spoon in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. I swooned for him as Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility. And of course, I utterly adored him as Professor Snape.

When he took out a full page ad to thank J.K. Rowling for the wonderful ride of the Harry Potter films, I officially added Alan Rickman to my mental BEST PEOPLE EVER list. (If you don’t have such a list, I suggest you get on that).
This weekend, I went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Hands down, the best part of the film for me was Snape. I have a feeling I’ll be buying the DVD and watching Snape crying over Lily Potter about ten dozen times. Unrequited love? A lifetime of hiding ones feelings and protecting a child while wearing a mask of villainy? Redemption? Villains turned heroes? Oh, my God. It pushes every last one of my favorite story buttons. I’m getting heart palpitations just thinking about it. (No, I’ve only had one cup of coffee, friends. Don’t go there).
So in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m blogging about Mr. Rickman because of the evil Klout number drop. But, I’m also doing it because it has been a few days now, and I’m able to write this without falling into a sniveling dripping mess. Because, damn, I’m going to miss that character!
Farewell, Snape. I can’t wait to see what Mr. Rickman does next.

  1. Indeed one of the BEST PEOPLE EVER, along with his Harry Potter co-star Gary Oldman.

I am in the midst of adoring Jane Austen at the moment, having recently watched 'Bridget Jones' Diary,' the illegitimate offspring of 'Pride and Prejudice.' When I finish reading 'Pride and Prejudice: Hidden Lusts' and treat myself to the film, I may also have to rent this 'Sense and Sensibility' you speak of. I've never read the version WITHOUT sea monsters (can't resist a good mash-up, obviously) but if it has Alan Rickman, it must be good.

    Yippee kie-ie-ay!

  2. Hmm, I have not read the version with sea monsters, though I found the book video hilarious. Perhaps I should read it and just imagine Alan Rickman right into it. You must definitely rent Sense and Sensibility. It also has one of my favorite proposal scenes in it, though sadly, Rickman is not in that scene.

  3. He was in this little known, lovely movie, called Something the Lord Made and as the mother of a black son, I love this movie and the fact that he's in it makes me love him more. My family will tell you I have a thing for him. Love Galaxy Quest, too, for his role!

  4. Huge headsmack. GALAXY QUEST!!! I love that film. Love, love, love. Though my favorite line is not his, it's the one about Gilligan's Island. "Those poor people!"

Yes. There are so many wonderful films he has been in. Many small ones. About ten years ago, I went on an Alan Rickman kick and had stacks of video cassettes in my house. I binged for days.

  5. Umm, now I feel like one of the losers sitting alone at the lunch table. Had no idea about Klout and my number is just sad.

Love Alan Rickman. Maybe I should be blogging about him.

  6. I adore Alan Rickman, and while Snape is cool, my favorite of his roles will always be as the lonely ghost in Truly, Madly, Deeply.

  7. Laura, I'm not sure I know that one. *adds to list*

By the way, you don't happen to know Deanna (posted above you) do you? Since you both make beads. :) And write romance?

  8. He was hands down the best actor in the movies. And that whole Pensieve scene was amazing.

  9. I think JK Rowling said one time that Snape was a gift. It seemed to me that even she didn't realize what gold she'd struck with him until fandom had latched onto him so fiercely. His ambiguity is just marvelous!

    And, yeah...Alan Rickman!!

  10. P.S. that movie version of 'Sense and Sensibility' was great! Alan Rickman wasn't the only Potter cast member; it also has "Professor Trelawney" and "Dolores Umbridge."

I suppose many English films are like that, though. I couldn't make it through 'The King's Speech' without thinking, "The duchess is Bellatrix LeStrange! The old king is Dumbledore! OMG, Wormtail is Winston Churchill!"

  11. P.P.S. Helena Bonham Carter - also one of the BEST PEOPLE EVER.

  12. Erin, glad you liked it! How funny about your reaction. I'm an anglophile, so I after watching tons of BBC stuff over the years, I tend to see these actors together often. I have so many different weird reactions to different film--like when a couple were a father and daughter in one movie and then are married to one another in the next. So odd!

  13. Don't forget his role in Dogma. Kevin Smith was so impressed to get him that he told Jason Mewes he needed to shape up because "we cast Hans f'ing Gruber!" One of my favorite Kevin Smith interview moments ever.
